Considered by many to be the preeminent truck accident attorney in the country. Joe has recovered more than $1 billion for his clients in over 35 states from his office in Atlanta, Georgia.

He is the co-founder of the Academy of Truck Accident Attorneys, former Chair of the American Association of Justice Truck Litigation Group, former President of the National Trial Lawyers Trucking Trial Lawyers and founding Chair of the National Board of Truck Accident Lawyers.

He is among the first lawyers to be Board Certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in Truck Accident Law and sits on the NBTA Board. In addition to his expertise in trucking, Joe is a former police officer with advanced training in crash investigation and reconstruction, human factors, psychodrama, storytelling and neurolinguistic programming. He recently authored a book to help train police officers on truck crash related subjects.

He is widely known for his creative and unique approaches to preparing and presenting cases and for his ability to craft and present the compelling human story in each of his cases. Joe handles a small number catastrophic truck crash cases at a time so he can focus his resources on achieving the best possible results for his clients.

He spends the rest of his time working as a trucking safety advocate, author and educator. Joe has authored books, DVDs and articles on trucking and litigation best practices, and has given over 600 presentations on these subjects to lawyers, judges, and trucking industry stakeholders.

Joe grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his undergraduate education while working full time as a police officer in metropolitan Atlanta. As a police officer, he investigated hundreds of crashes and crime scenes and spent many hours in courtrooms. Joe learned that justice is not blind, and that people are not always treated equally in a courtroom. Joe witnessed firsthand what a huge difference a good lawyer can make and that drove his desire to go to law school.

Joe graduated with highest honors from Oglethorpe University, and with honors from the University of Georgia School of Law. He was an attorney law clerk to the Honorable B. Avant Edenfield, Chief U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Georgia. In 1994,

Joe began private practice in Atlanta. That same year, he was appointed by as a part-time Magistrate Judge in Fulton County, Georgia (where he used to be a police officer). He was hand selected by then-chief judge Charlie Carnes and was the youngest judge to ever have been appointed in Fulton County, Georgia. Joe served as a part-time judge for 20 years while simultaneously building and running a serious injury law firm with a national reach.

Today, Joe is recognized as a preeminent lawyer, educator, public advocate and author on trucking safety and truck crash litigation.

Joe brings to his cases training in physics, engineering, forensics, dynamics, biomechanics, human factors and accident reconstruction. This knowledge has proven crucial when investigating cases, examining opposing expert witnesses (cross-examination during trial) and in devising innovative visual aids for trial to help his clients win their case. He is known for thinking outside the box when it comes to case strategy, development and presentation and his work is sought after by other attorneys across the country.

Joe is on the faculty of the prestigious Trial School and Trial Lawyer University, through which he continues to help develop and mentor lawyers from around the country on innovative and cutting-edge case development and trial presentation techniques.

Joe’s talents as a lawyer helped him to quickly develop a very strong local and national reputation. His work has been featured in major national media such as the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Detroit News, and hundreds of local and national television broadcasts.

Joe was named Trucking Trial Lawyer of the Year in 2014 and 2015 by the American Association of Justice Trucking Litigation Group, Best Georgia Personal Injury Lawyer by Best Lawyers in America in 2016 and 2020, 2020 Georgia Legal Trailblazer by ALM (Law.com), and has been named a Super Lawyer every year since 2007.

Joe is licensed in Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, New York and Texas but based on his reputation, experience and results has been retained to work on cases in over 35 States.
