10 Largest Trucking Companies in the United States

10 Largest Trucking Companies in the United States

Every day, thousands of trucks drive millions of miles delivering goods across the country. The U.S. has countless trucking companies, the largest of which earn billions of dollars every year.

What makes a trucking company the largest? Is it the profit it makes or the size of its fleet? Both are reasonable ways to judge size. The following are the 10 largest trucking companies in the U.S.

UPS

This massive delivery company has 94,000 delivery vehicles designed primarily for urban areas. These vehicles are smaller than 18-wheelers but larger than the average passenger vehicle or SUV, and UPS truck accidents are rare on highways.

FedEx

This competitor to UPS is only slightly smaller in fleet size and annual revenue. FedEx reported a revenue of $87.7 billion in 2024 and has a fleet of almost 81,000 vehicles. Unlike UPS, though, over a third of this fleet is dedicated to freight, which means they have more semi trucks.

J.B. Hunt

J.B. Hunt is the first truck company on this list that is dedicated almost exclusively to freight delivery. This company owns over 13,000 tractor-trailers for use in the U.S. It also has one of the highest revenues of any freight company that owns its own vehicles.

Ryder

Ryder owns more trucks than UPS and FedEx combined. You might think that with that many trucks, it would be more profitable than both companies. However, that isn’t the case. Ryder uses a different business model than most of the other companies on this list. Many of its vehicles are rented out to others.

TFI International

While its headquarters are in Canada, TFI International has 70% of its operations in the United States. This puts it squarely in the top 10 of all trucking companies operating in the U.S. The company owns over 45,000 trailers.

Knight-Swift

What sets Knight-Swift apart from many other trucking companies is that it specializes in full truckloads. This means when you see a Knight-Swift vehicle on the road, it is probably close to the maximum weight allowed by law. And you are likely to see one, since the company has 19,000 trucks.

Schneider National

Schneider National is a smaller version of Knight-Swift. It also primarily focuses on full-truckload freight. The only major differences are that its fleet is about 30% the size of Knight-Swift’s and that it offers services in Mexico and Canada.

XPO

XPO is the exact opposite of the previous two trucking companies. This company focuses on less-than-truckload services. The company has used data science to optimize routes and loads, making it one of the most efficient trucking companies in the U.S.

Old Dominion Freight Line

While founded in Virginia, Old Dominion has one of the largest international footprints of any company on this list. It offers less-than-truckload services throughout the U.S., the Caribbean, the Far East, Central America, Europe, and South America.

Landstar Systems

What separates Landstar Systems from other trucking companies on this list is that it doesn’t own any trucks. Instead, it owns 17,600 trailers that are towed by independent agents, third-party operators, and leased vehicles. When needed, they can call on tens of thousands of trucks.
